Purpose

Single-photon emitters are instrumental in the transmission of quantum information and in quantum sensing measurements. For practical applications, stable and scalable single-photon sources, which operate at room temperature and are electrically triggered, are crucial. The Project will contribute to the development of room-temperature and electrically driven single-photon sources using atomic defects in hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN). This two-dimensional (2D) material hosts defects that act as stable single-photon sources and are confined to the surface, which facilitates electrically pumped photon emission. The development of this new singlephoton source will be accomplished by: 1) building an optical setup to characterize the single-photon emitters, 2) engineering defects in h-BN flakes, 3) integrating these flakes into tunnel junctions via 2D material assembly, and 4) demonstrating electrically pumped single-photon emission from these tunnel junctions. Ultimately, the Project will set the stage for the development of scalable chip-integrated quantum photonic technologies.
