Purpose

The objective of the project is to assist Ontario Farmland Trust (OFT) work with farmers and rural landowners to protect farmland across the province.  Through legal agreements, they permanently protect farmland and associated natural and ecological features in perpetuity, protect rural communities from urban sprawl, maintain local food systems, and protect habitat for species-at-risk. The Intern will actively steward protected properties through site visits; write technical reports detailing property ecology and agricultural uses; identify key farmlands for protection; participate in OFT’s Land Securement Committee; draft comments to provincial agricultural policy consultations;  assist with planning the annual Farmland Forum; attend outreach events to connect urban Ontarians with agriculture and its importance; coordinate and deliver presentations to urban audiences.
