Purpose
Manitoba Justice’s Youth Justice Branch proposes to develop and implement a pilot project to assess the impact of dedicated Conference Coordinators on the use and efficacy of section 19 conferences, as an option available in the Youth Criminal Justice Act to assist both decision makers, and youth involved in the Criminal Justice System. Two Section 19 Conference Coordinators will be hired to identify and document the use and outcomes of section 19 conferences, while addressing their known challenges. In addressing these challenges, it is anticipated that conferences will be more readily available, better organized, and foster connections between organizations and professionals. Finally, these conferences will promote youth rehabilitation and reintegration into society with a focus on the Indigenous population in the advancement and commitments of the Province of Manitoba's path to reconciliation.
