Purpose
The objective of this Project is to document First Nations wildland fire stewardship knowledge of the Cree, Dene and Dakota cultural groups in Northern Saskatchewan. To enhance community capacity to research, mitigate wildfire incidence and risk on their own terms, and to generate best practices in order to inform provincial wildland fire management policies, operations and science. The Proponent will assemble First Nations wildland fire knowledge in Northern Saskatchewan. This initiative will increase community capacity to prepare for and respond to extreme wildfire events and improve services provided by wildfire management and emergency response. It will protect forest resources and communities by helping First Nations assert authority and jurisdiction on their traditional territories.
