Purpose

This grant request is for student and post-doc salaries and travel plus operational funds to support superconducting radiofrequency (SRF) using infrastructure funded through a separate NSERC RTI. The goal is to develop new processing techniques and new materials to achieve a breakthrough in understanding and performance while training highly qualified personnel (HQP). Included in the RTI are funds to fabricate two coaxial resonators that will be used to test rf surface resistance as a function of accelerating field and operating frequency. Also included are funds to construct a new spectrometer in the beta-NMR facility at TRIUMF with high magnetic field capability in a field direction parallel to the sample face. This spectrometer will be used to characterize treated Niobium samples as well as new SRF materials like Nb3Sn and multi-layer materials as a complement to characterizations being done with muSR [1][2]. The funds from this proposal will leverage the RTI funds successfully secured in 2015 and support students and post-docs to implement and operate the equipment to enable breakthroughs that attack the major questions facing the SRF community today.
