WFP - World Food Programme

Purpose

This grant represents Canada’s long-term institutional support to the World Food Programme (WFP). WFP uses these funds, along with other donors’ funding, to achieve its mandate. WFP is the food assistance arm of the United Nations and is the largest humanitarian organization fighting hunger in the world. Its mandate is to provide food assistance quickly to vulnerable people in humanitarian emergencies such as natural disasters, civil conflict and war, and contribute to reducing global food insecurity. Global Affairs Canada's support to WFP helps fulfill its mandate through activities that include: (1) saving lives and protecting livelihoods in emergencies; (2) supporting or restoring food security and nutrition, and establishing or rebuilding livelihoods in fragile settings and following emergencies; (3) reducing risk and enabling people, communities and countries to meet their own food and nutrition needs; and (4) reducing under-nutrition and break the intergenerational cycle of hunger.
