Purpose

The Empowering Women in Non-Traditional Trades for the Northern Economy project has been selected as part of the Innovation for Women’s Economic Empowerment in Ghana Call for Preliminary Proposals. The project will support women in rural areas of Northern Ghana who encounter difficulties in accessing specialized skills, thereby limiting them from reaching their full economic empowerment. The project will train and empower young women to participate in non-traditional technical trades (NTT) in essential economic growth sectors (such as welding, electrical and electronics, mechanical maintenance, agricultural mechanization, agro-processing, and auto mechanics). In order to improve women's employment and business readiness, partner institutions will be supported to increase women’s access to apprenticeships, to “soft” and “hard” business and entrepreneurship skills training, and to information and communications technology. The project will mostly work with nine Technical Education and Vocational Training (TVET) institutions in Upper West, Upper East and Northern Regions. The project will support the creation of “entrepreneur hubs” within TVET institutions to deliver entrepreneurship training to students and local communities, and link female students with NTT apprentices and mentors, outside the school and from local industry. The project is expected to directly benefit 12,775 beneficiaries and intermediaries, of which two-thirds will be women. 2,160 young women are expected to complete industry-relevant "training-to-employment" courses in non-traditional trades. An additional 3,600 female and 3,600 male TVET students will benefit from business and entrepreneurship skills offered through Entrepreneurship Hubs in partner TVET institutions.
