Purpose

The contribution to the C.D. Howe Institute will be used to host a conference and engage industry, academic and government participants to better define the linkages and understand the impacts of regulatory competitiveness. The goal is to maximize the health, safety, security and sustainability of the environment outcomes that regulations aim to achieve, while minimizing burden and strain on the economy. The Institute will bring stakeholders together to: 1) help define the concepts of regulatory competitiveness and the effect of cumulative regulatory burden on competitiveness; 2) examine the relationship between cumulative regulatory burden and private sector competitiveness; and, 3) highlight typical regulatory touchpoints for firms and examples where the government has been successful in making its regulatory systems more transparent, efficient, dynamic, and innovative. The Institute will prepare a report to summarize the findings and recommendations elaborated during the conference and through their research. The information could be used to inform regulatory policy, public sector practices, as well as potential changes to modernize the Red Tape Reduction Act.
