Purpose

Trican Well Service Ltd. has approached SAIT Applied Research and Innovation Services (ARIS) for technical assistance to investigate the viscoelastic properties of magnetorheological (MR) fluids whose viscosity and stiffness can be controlled by magnetic fields. Although MR fluids have been used in the manufacturing of automotive products, medical supplies and optical components, their application in the oil and gas industry has not seen significant progress. The proposed preliminary investigation will explore the feasibility of using MR fluids in oil well operations to improve zonal isolation and well pressure control. The project will deliver useful results to further the development of MR fluid technology by Trican, leading to commercialization._x000D_
