Purpose

This new partnership between Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) and Eleos Robotics Inc. will launch a Phase I research project to assist Eleos with development of weed recognition capacity for their patent-pending agricultural robotic weeder. "Culture Bot", an artificially intelligent robot which can negotiate uneven terrain and geo-locates itself using cloud and GPS technology, designed to monitor row crops for multiple purposes. The first function to be built into the robot will be to detect, identify and eliminate weeds using a high-precision microwave targeting system, before they require chemical management. KPU's computer science expertise will help develop the multiple software components that will constitute the robot's "Cogitative Engine" then test the software to determine the best interface for the propriety hardware and provide the robot with precise instructions based on multiple environmental variables. KPU will also bring horticultural expertise to ensure testing on weeds is valid and weed ID algorithms are providing the correct ID. The company will benefit from access to expertise they do not currently have. Students and new grads will benefit by developing skills and experience in applied research. Successful completion of this project will increase KPU's capacity to assist local companies with the R&D in related future projects. It will also open the door to the next Eleos challenges for their Culture Bot - to monitor and treat pests and diseases.
