Purpose

Majority of hospitals in North America use 3-5 disposable ports (aka trocars) for creating tunnels of various diameters in order to provide access for laparoscopic surgical instruments during every surgery. Moreover, up to 20% of these surgeries require port upsizing (replacing a small port with a larger port)—especially during emergencies thus leading to use of more environmentally harmful disposable ports and additional waste. In fact 9 million disposable ports are consumed annually just in North America (and 21 million globally). Xpan is developing a proprietary reposable expanding surgical port system that aims to improve patient safety, reduce surgical inefficiencies, and most importantly reduce hospital costs and waste associated wit
