Purpose
An artificial intelligence (AI) approach of dimensionality reduction will be applied to the design and manufacture of elevated-voltage photonic power converters (PPC) operating at 1550 nm for the first time to enable combined power and data long-distance transfer. AI is an essential tool to overcome the large parameter space for optoelectronic device optimization. AIenhanced PPC designs will be grown using industrial metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) processes, which themselves will be optimized via a parallel development of AI enhanced process modeling. Standard upright designs will be compared to thin film inverted structures with backreflectors for thinner, higher-efficiency designs. Materials, fabrication, and full PPC devices will be characterized over the course of the Project.
