Purpose

The Project will develop quantum sensors based on nanophotonic devices integrated with diamond nanomechanical resonators. This system offers powerful quantum sensing capabilities ranging from detection of local fields (magnetic, electric, temperature) to external forces and torques.Nanophotonic devices offer a path for efficiently optically measuring them,as well as the potential for realising scalable implementations of these on chip sensors.Deployment of these systems in practical applications is a challenge. For example, technologies for robustly operating these devices in cryogenic environments or outside of the lab must be created. In the Project, this will be realised by leveraging existing integrated photonic device engineering expertise, both in creating fiber-to-chip couplers and in applying engineered metasurfaces and inverse design. Integration of these sensors with superconducting quantum technology will also be demonstrated, enabling the conversion of microwave photons to optical photons via their mutual coupling to nanomechanical degrees offreedom.
