Purpose

The project aims to develop a novel, deterministic entangled photon source based on quantum dots in nanowires with enhanced performance beyond state-of-the-art for distributed quantum sensing, higher resolution imaging and long-distance entanglement distribution. The project team will design and fabricate a broadband nanowire optical cavity around a single quantum dot to increase the emission rate beyond 100 MHz, enhance the pair extraction efficiency 100-fold while maintaining near-perfect entanglement fidelity and overcome the major problem of charge noise in semiconductors for achieving high single-photon indistinguishability. Such enhanced performance of an entangled photon source has not been achieved in a single device and will enable entanglement swapping from remote quantum dots for the first time, which is transformative for quantum sensing and communication.
