Purpose
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) focuses on developing, protecting and restoring sustainable livelihoods so that the integrity of societies that depend on farming, livestock, fish, forests and other natural resources is not threatened by crises. FAO contributes to a quicker and more sustainable recovery of local food production while preserving development gains, reducing dependency on aid and increasing self-reliance of crisis-affected populations. With the support of GAC and other donors, FAO is providing emergency assistance to over 4.3 million people affected by conflict and acute food insecurity in Nigeria and Somalia. Project activities include: (1) distributing agricultural inputs, such as nutrition-sensitive seeds, tools and fishing kits; (2) cash transfers and cash-for-work activities; (3) livestock support and veterinary inputs, such as vaccines, mineral blocks, fodder seed, collapsible water tanks and water trucking; (4) training in agricultural techniques; and (5) supporting emergency control measures of fall armyworm.
