Purpose

P006754001 & P006754002: The project helps developing countries to sustainably build their coastal economies while ensuring the protection and sustainable use of marine and coastal resources. It represents Canada’s contribution to the Global Program for the Blue Economy (PROBLUE), a World Bank-managed, multi-donor trust fund that aims to achieve integrated and sustainable economic development in healthy and productive oceans. The blue economy refers to the sustainable use of ocean resources for economic growth, improved livelihoods and jobs, and ocean ecosystem health. The project supports activities across four key themes, including: (1) the management of fisheries and aquaculture; (2) tackling marine pollution, including plastics; (3) the sustainable development of key oceanic sectors such as tourism, maritime transport, and offshore renewable energy; and (4) building the capacity of local governments to manage their marine and coastal resources in an integrated fashion to deliver more and long-lasting benefits to countries and communities.
