Purpose
This project aims to contribute to achieving the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework targets by supporting efforts in Madagascar to halt and reverse biodiversity loss in the Nosy Hara marine protected area (MPA). As part of Canada’s International Biodiversity Program, this initiative supports efforts to improve the governance and sustainable management of the Nosy Hara MPA and its 4 Locally Managed Marine Areas (LMMAs). This project seeks to promote women’s leadership in managing protected areas and support surrounding communities vulnerable to the negative impacts of climate change and biodiversity loss to adopt climate-smart practices and diversify their means of income. Project activities include: (1) delivering technical support and capacity building training for MPA and LMMA managers; (2) initiating coral reefs restoration efforts; (3) providing training on leadership, advocacy and natural resource management for women and vulnerable groups; (4) promoting alternative sustainable livelihood options for communities; and (5) facilitating climate-related disaster mitigation measures’ adoption.
