Purpose

P003038001: In light of persistently high levels of maternal mortality and unmet need for family planning, and prevalent harmful practices (including female genital mutilation and child marriage), the Advancing Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights in Indonesia project, in partnership with UNFPA and UNICEF, aims to transform sexual and reproductive health and rights for women and young people in Indonesia by addressing key gaps in the quality of birth attendants, access to comprehensive sexuality education and youth-friendly services for young people, and advocacy and community-based programming for the prevention of gender-based violence and harmful practices using the male involvement approach (focusing on child marriage and female genital mutilation). This initiative is directly aligned with Canada’s Feminist International Assistance Policy and supports Canada's commitment of $650M over three years to sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) P003038002: In light of persistently high levels of maternal mortality and unmet need for family planning, and prevalent harmful practices (including female genital mutilation and child marriage), the Advancing Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights in Indonesia project, in partnership with UNFPA and UNICEF, aims to transform sexual and reproductive health and rights for women and young people in Indonesia by addressing key gaps in the quality of birth attendants, access to comprehensive sexuality education and youth-friendly services for young people, and advocacy and community-based programming for the prevention of gender-based violence and harmful practices using the male involvement approach (focusing on child marriage and female genital mutilation). This initiative is directly aligned with Canada’s Feminist International Assistance Policy and supports Canada's commitment of $650M over three years to sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). The project’s objective to transform SRHR for women and youth in Indonesia is facing additional challenges due to COVID-19. Existing SRHR issues in the country including child marriage, unmet contraceptive needs, gender-based violence and services to pregnant women have been exacerbated by the imposition of community quarantines, limited access to and/or utilization of sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services by midwives and health practitioners. In line with Canada’s FIAP, the additional funding and activities would deliver commitments on SRHR and support the Government of Indonesia National Medium-Term Development Plan 2020-2024 targets, by ensuring the SRH services during the pandemic. The proposed amendment would help to reduce the impact of COVID-19 on the SRHR of women and adolescent girls in Indonesia by implementing activities to improve the capacity of the health system to provide gender-responsive SRH information and services in the current context of a pandemic, thus increasing the utilization of those services.
